In my PhD project, we investigated the incidence of diabetic retinopathy among the entire Greenlandic population, based on participants with diabetes who participated in the population survey B2018 and among people registered with diabetes, in the nationwide electronic patient records. On this basis, we could conclude that the incidence of diabetic retinopathy in Greenland is low and can possibly be explained by ethnicity or genetic protective factors.
Further in our project, we developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model, specific to the Greenlandic population, for automatic grading/assessment of the different degrees of diabetic retinopathy based on ICDR, at an eye screening. Unfortunately, the sensitivity and specificity of our model was too low to be used directly for screening in the clinic.
